The Kent Stav Club

Simon Cole joined Ice and Fire in 2004. Since then he has been studying Stav in Oxford under the instruction of Graham Butcher. In Autumn 2006 he established the Kent Stav Club which is affiliated to Ice and Fire. He is pleased to be able to provide courses and classes for beginners and organise more advanced training courses through Ice and Fire.

Stav is a European tradition of body, mind and spirit training. It orignated in Norway many hundreds of years ago and was brought to the UK by Ivar Hafskjold in the early 1990s.

Stav literally means 'knowledge of the rune staves' and Stav training is about gaining this knowledge. On one level this is simply a matter of remembering the rune symbols and being able to state the meanings and associations. But on a more profound level Stav means being able to manifest the runes physically and then use them to see the web of orlog.

The purpose of Stav is to help us to live full and awakened lives. But in order to really learn Stav a structure of training and testing is needed and we have found that martial arts training provides just such a structure. Serious martial training requires the full comittment of body, mind and spirit which both challenges the student to learn and practice and gives concrete feedback as learning and transformation take place.
